Cardiovascular disease is todays biggest health challenge. Every six to seven minutes, a Canadian dies of heart disease. Thats about 80,000 of us a year. For many people, a first heart attack is fatal. Heart disease is more likely to kill you than cancer, respiratory diseases, or car accidents. And, contrary to popular belief, heart attacks kill even more women than men. There are a number of risk factors for CVD a family history of heart attacks, heart problems, or strokes prior to age 65 the presence of diabetes or high blood pressure; previous heart problems, strokes or mini-strokes smoking or exposure to second-hand smoke; being overweight especially having excessive weight around the waist; having a high blood cholesterol reading; lack of regular physical exercise; and being over 45 years of age for men or 50 for women. Eight in 10 Canadians have at least one risk factors for CVD and one in 10 has three or more factors.1 While we cant change our age, we can influence some of these risk factors by our lifestyle choices and behaviours.
